It was maybe between the years 1991 - 1993 when my father bought our very first personal computer. I was content in playing the DOS games back then. Eventually I learned how to use the cd and dir DOS commands. That's when I found an .EXE file (I think it was win.exe but I'm not sure) and executed it and Windows 3.1 came on screen.
Windows 3.1 was the first GUI operating system I ever used. I was thrilled to see them icons and playing with Paintbrush. Today, icons have become an essential part of modern GUI operating systems. Here's a brief history of computer icons I found over at the psdtuts+ site.
